This year was sadly a very tough competition, with many entrants distinguishing themselves for their promotion of negative Irish stereotypes. However, this year we have to give the award to Walmart, for several reasons:
- They have taken defamation for profit, previously the province of “head shops”, main stream
- They received bonus point for hypocrisy. Less we forget that this was the company that very publicly banned Paula Deen’s merchandise because of Ms. Deens use of an outrageous racial epithet (a move we fully support), but apparently Walmart has no problem themselves in engaging in targeting Irish Americans with outrageous messages.
- They also get points for expanding stereotype laden and drink associated merchandise into new territories with their “Irish I Could Drink” Maternity Top, a rare offensive daily double.
